Week Three - God Guides the Wise

Consider this thought... since the initial Fall and man's separation from God in the Garden, God is the one who has come seeking us, not the other way around. It began with "Adam, where are you?" and it continues to this day. The fact is, God desires relationship with you so much, he has gone to extensive means to create in you a seeking heart for him. He did this with the Wise Men, and he guides the wise who seek him still today...

Are you a seeker?

Seekers, those who are really seekers, will stop at nothing to arrive at their goal, whether that is a place, a position or a person. Recognize this, God has placed deep within your soul, a desire to seek him. Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived put it this way, "He has also set eternity in the human heart..." (Ecclesiastes 3:11-NIV). You were wired–to seek God!

The Wise Men of the Christmas story were seekers; they came from far away, leaving their homes on a quest that they did not know where it would end; and probably without any real certainty about who or what it was they would find! God, in his great grace and love, gifted them with seeking hearts that they might find him. He does the same for us today!

That innate desire, your internal "drive" that draws you to His Word, to the people of God, to seek His Presence, is a gift for you; to help you initially discover him, and then draw nearer and nearer to him.

Oddly enough, even though it was God's gift in that first century that drew those Wise Men; and even though it was them that brought gifts to the newborn king; they were the ones that received the most from their search.

There is something about the satisfaction of arriving at your destination, achieving your goal, or gaining audience with the person you desired, that goes deep. Imagine the depth of significance those three storied travelers experienced when they finally stood in the presence of the infant Jesus.

The scripture account tells us that they returned home by a different route, most likely to avoid King Herod's vindictive agenda (Matthew 2:12). You can rest assured, after their personal encounter with the Infant King, it was not only their route that was different as they returned home, but also their hearts. May our hearts be changed as we experience Jesus personally this Christmas as well... Because of Bethlehem.

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him."
~ Matthew 2:1-2 (NIV)

When you seek Jesus with a heart that desires to worship, you will find him

You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.
~ Jeremiah 29:13 (NIV)

The Message renders this verse even more directly to this point:

"When you come looking for me, you'll find me. Yes, when you get serious about finding me and want it more than anything else, I'll make sure you won't be disappointed."
~ Jeremiah 29:13-14 (MSG)

Prayer for the Week
Lord Jesus, thank you for first seeking me, and then gifting me with a searching heart to be drawn to you in response. This Christmas, may I make you my soul's ambition, seeking you with all that I am; for when I do, I will never be disappointed.
In Your Holy Name, Amen.
